Dear People of God in Kootenay Diocese,
Greetings in the name of Christ!
I have a couple of difficult pieces of news.
With huge regret, I have accepted the resignation of the Venerable Rita Harrison, the Executive Archdeacon, effective at the end of January. She has written a note to the Diocese in this issue of Kootenay. I am grateful for the excellent work she has done in the past few months in the Diocesan work of supporting parishes in this time of transition, serving the Structures Working Group, Diocesan Council, many parishes with building, personnel, insurance issues, to name a few! I have appreciated her skill, clarity, grace, and sense of humour and will miss working with her in the office!
At the January 10 meeting of Diocesan Council, I announced that with regret I had accepted the resignation of our volunteer treasurer Monty Tuck, effective March 31, 2023. Monty has been our treasurer since November 2019, walking us through the complicated time of Covid, serving faithfully to support parish treasurers, Synod Office, and Diocesan Council in a time of change. I am grateful that he has agreed to remain on the Administration and Finance committee of Diocesan Council. We will have future times to convey our thanks to him for his work.
As I write this, we have completed three of the four Diocesan town hall meetings to hear feedback regarding the Structures Working Group Report “A Path Forward”. There has been very good participation and attendance, with insightful questions and comments that will help clarify our next steps. Lovely to see the faces across the Diocese and to hear the depth of care for our Church. The SWG will be meeting with me to collate our notes from these meetings and report back to you.
Please continue to keep me and the Diocese in your prayers.

A note from the Ven. Rita Harrison
Thank you for the opportunity to work among you for the past nine months. It has become clear that a job that was substantial when I accepted it is rapidly becoming larger than I can continue to manage, and so I must leave. I do not know where my next steps lead, but I take these steps with peace and joy. God be with you as you move into God's future together.

Structures Working Group (SWG)
The SWG recently released the below report entitled "A Path Forward" which has been shared with clergy and congregations in the Diocese. Four town hall zoom meetings have been offered to give members of the Diocese an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments on the report. The final town hall meeting will be tonight at 7pm Pacific.
Fraudulent Emails
We are aware of multiple instances where fraudulent email accounts have been used to impersonate Bishop Lynne, parish staff and other members of the Diocese. In some cases they ask you to purchase gift cards or to respond "by email only" to an important request. Please do not provide any financial information by email or respond to suspicious emails. If you are unsure if a message is legitimate, please call the synod office to report it.
Archbishop Lynne and the Provincial Council would like to invite you to a specially-designed webinar entitled "Emergency Preparedness: Working Together- Community in Action". On Saturday, February 4, 2023 from 1:00pm-3:00pm Pacific, our keynote speaker Lieutenant Commander The Reverend John Hounsell-Drover will cover the foundations of Disaster and Emergency Management 101 and discuss how we can prepare our families and parishes as well as partner with local agencies and emergency planning groups to support our community when emergency situations arise.

The registration deadline is January 28, 2023.
Camp OAC has 10 camping sites that are available to be rented weekly or seasonally to members of the Diocese of Kootenay. Many of these sites are located next to the beautiful Lake Okanagan and feature private beaches. The camp is currently taking applications for the seasonal sites. On Thursdays in Lent, Dean David and Bishop Lynne will lead a book study and
discussion of Walter Brueggemann's Materiality as Resistance: Five
Elements for Moral Action in the Real World (Westminster John Knox
Press, 2020). Brueggemann is a prolific author ordained in the United
Church of Christ, and Professor Emeritus of Old Testament studies at
Columbia Theological Seminary. The book explores "how we as Christians
may reengage our materiality for the common good." That is: how do we
use the matter we have at hand -- Money, Food, The Body, Time, and Place
-- to live out the Gospel from the Church for the good of the world?
